Applications Engineer

CEO Office · Oxford, Oxfordshire
Department CEO Office
Employment Type Full-Time
Compensation £38k-£48k

We are looking for Applications Engineers to help accelerate adoption of our next-generation laser processing platform.

Opsydia is transforming security and traceability in the diamond gemstone industry with our precision laser technology, which can write tamper-proof, permanent identities inside diamonds and other precious gems. Our first deployed products, the Dx000 series systems, utilise optical techniques and machine vision to secure diamond identities on a commercial scale, supporting transparency and traceability initiatives for ethical supply chains.

Our technology also provides a platform for next-generation functional devices in diamond. In the research and development, stage it has a number of potential disruptive applications, from quantum devices to chemical and magnetic sensors.

THE ROLE

As an Applications Engineer you will promote the use of Opsydia’s systems through bespoke proof-of-concept trials and tailored technology demonstrations. This role includes both technical development and customer facing opportunities; you will become an internal expert on the possibilities (and limits!) of the technology and use this to create compelling demonstrations that meet customers’ visions. This is an exciting role which has direct business impact and a wide scope within a scale-up, so there is an opportunity to be involved with all parts of the sales & product development processes.

Working with Product & Engineering Teams you will:-

  • Become the internal ‘power user’ of Opsydia’s core laser platform technology
  • Directly interface with prospective customers to understand their vision
  • Clearly communicate possibilities of new and existing systems
  • Create compelling demonstrations to drive the sales pipeline
  • Plan and execute bespoke proof-of-concept trials for customers in various markets
  • Support the Engineering Team with R&D experiments to push the limits of the technology
  • Use, modify (and create!) microscopes to capture high-quality images of samples

ABOUT YOU

You will be a creative thinker with a technical background but strong customer focus. A degree or equivalent experience in technical field is preferred. This role would suit a generalist engineer with an eye for detail who likes to work with a small, collaborative team.

You will be able to demonstrate that you have the following:-

  • An ability to understand and use complex technical products
  • Confidence working on hardware systems with programmable components
  • An eye for detail and focus on delivering quality
  • Proactivity to develop practical solutions for customers
  • A disciplined approach to design and execution of technical experiments
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

You may also have:-

  • Experience with optical systems and lasers
  • Interest in photography/microphotography, using magnifiers and/or optical microscopes
  • Experience developing software or writing basic scripts
  • Interest in 3D printing and/or other rapid prototyping techniques

This is advertised as a full-time role, however, part-time would be considered at a minimum of 0.8fte. We are pleased to accommodate flexible and hybrid working where appropriate but, as a hardware company, we find hands-on system and collaboration time to be highly valuable, so encourage time spent in the office and expect this when required. This role may require some travel to customer’s locations.

As part of the recruitment process a selected candidate will be required to undergo security screening to BS7858.

Closing date: 19 December 2022. Applications will be reviewed as received so this vacancy may be closed earlier; early applications are therefore encouraged.
